Nothing captures the holiday spirit quite like a real Christmas tree! The fresh pine scent, beautiful lights, and sentimental ornaments brings warmth and coziness to the house during the holiday season. However, the charm of a real Christmas tree comes with the need for a little extra TLC. To help your natural conifer thrive throughout the holiday season, up to a month and a half with the right care, here are essential tips directly from us at Inches Nursery.
The Lifespan of a Real Christmas Tree
A properly cared-for real Christmas tree can stay happy and healthy in your home for approximately four to six weeks. "Adding regular, fresh water is key to extending your tree's longevity," advises Bill Merow, our in-house Landscape Architect. Once the water level in the stand dips too low, convincing your tree to absorb water again becomes a challenge.
Essential Care Tips:
Keep Water In The Stand:
Like any living plant, your Christmas tree needs plenty of water to stay fresh! Opt for a tree stand with a good reservoir and check the water level frequently to ensure your tree stays hydrated.
Contrary to popular belief, drilling a hole at the bottom of the trunk has little effect on the tree's ability to stay hydrated and healthy. We do recommend using warm/hot water the first time filling up and while there are mixed opinions on the effectiveness, we advise adding Sprite or similar sugary soft drinks to the water of a fresh-cut Christmas tree. This is based on the belief that the sugar could act as a food source to help sustain the tree’s freshness
A Fresh Cut:
To maximize water absorption, make a fresh cut at the base of the trunk. Trees produce sap to seal cuts, which can hinder water absorption. Our staff suggests trimming 1/2 inch off the trunk right before setting it in the water stand, ideally the same day you bring it home.
How to Trim the Trunk: Using a saw, trim 1/2 inch off the trunk before placing it in your tree stand. Avoid cutting the trunk at an angle or in a V-shape because it will make it harder to keep the tree upright in the stand. And at Inches Nursery, we can give your tree a fresh cut before tying it to your vehicle.
Proper Placement:
Heat sources like direct sunlight or heaters can cause your tree to dry out prematurely. Keep your tree away from direct heat to prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. Lowering the room temperature where your tree is located can also slow down the drying process.
Lighting Safety:
Having lights on the Christmas tree is beautiful but let's not forget that they can pose a fire hazard if left on continuously, especially if you’re not around to monitor them. It’s best to switch off the tree lights before going to bed or leaving the house. Using smaller lights can lessen the drying effect on your tree and make sure you are frequently watering the tree if you prefer larger bulbs.
By following these tips from our staff and landscape experts, your Christmas tree will maintain its lushness and beauty, ensuring a joyous centerpiece for your holiday celebrations!
